With so many different social media platforms out there, it can be hard to determine which ones to use and which ones to set aside. Social media is a great way to grow you business, but you must select the platform(s) your dream customer is using. In this post, I’ll be covering the demographics of four of the popular social media platforms: Facebook, PinterestInstagram and Twitter.

It’s not hard to believe that 85% of U.S. adults are Internet users. What is surprising is how many are on social media. I’ve broken down each platform’s demographics with data from the wonderful folks at Pew Research Center and the study,  “Mobile Messaging and Social Media 2015”.

Facebook

Facebook has more users than any other social media platform, including 72% of all American adults. With such a high percentage of users, it seems like the perfect platform to find your dream client on. These statistics are based on internet users.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the most popular social media platform after Facebook with 31% of Internet users logging on. Not surprisingly, Pinterest is much more popular among women.

Instagram

My favorite social media platform, Intagram, is used by 28% of adults. Instagram is very popular with 18-29 year olds and the least popular platform among users 65+.

Twitter

I was surprise to see that only 23% of adults are on Twitter. Twitter is a fast paced social media platform, so it is not surprising to see it is popular among younger users and those who live in cities.

What’s Next?

Boy, what was a lot of data, right? What you should do next is look at each social media platform with your dream client in mind. For example, if you sell custom planners for busy moms, your dream client might be a female who is 30-49, lives in the suburbs and has an income of $75,000+. When  you look at the demographics of the different platforms, Pinterest might be a great place to start because it is popular among females and those who live in suburbs. There of course is no perfect formula, but using demographic data is always a good place to start.
